Érase Una Vez

A quinceañera storybook

Creative Director & Animator — Xoshel Media, for a private commission

The ask

She wanted something to play during the party. Her own idea was the usual one — a photo collage of her daughter through the years with a song under it, mostly to fill the silence in the room.

The call

In the consultation she mentioned the theme for the night was Disney princess. That changed the job. Instead of a slideshow we made a storybook: a once-upon-a-time telling of her daughter's actual story, narrated in Spanish with English subtitles. I trained a custom image model on family photographs so the characters read as her family, then deliberately retrained it on fewer photos when the first pass came out too photorealistic — a fifteen-year-old's story should look like a storybook, not like her. The script I wrote with the client, so the words were hers. Animation in that style normally means an agency, a budget she didn't have, and a timeline that wouldn't have made the date.
